Wyeth Inspired

I’m feeling a tad floaty after all of the positive messages that I received from you all yesterday.  Sorry, I didn’t respond to each one personally.  I just spent the day basking in all our your positive energy.

Speaking of energy.  How about the above picture?  Yes, it’s the back of my head.  I think that one of my kids took this picture and I love it.  Doesn’t it evoke a mystical mood with the muted sky and lightness of air.

It reminds me of the Jaime Wyeth painting of Orca Bates.

Check it out.  The sky is the same. The hair is the same.  The lighthouse is not the same, but it’s a lighthouse.

On that note,  I think that Orca Bates is one of the most fascinating creatures that Jamie Wyeth paints.  There is darkness and mystery around those paintings mixed a good dose of hard life and raw beauty capture the very image of islanders to me.

I just found this quote from Orca’s sister, “If Monhegan was a person, it’d be Orca.”  Gosh, I love that. Amazing how a single person can mirror the spirit of an entire place.  But, I also love how Jamie Wyeth explored the range of Orca, who he was, what he loved and preserved it in his art. Fascinating.

If you are ever in Rockland, Maine.  Be sure to check out more of Jamie Wyeth’s work at the Farnsworth Museum.  It’s not to be missed.
